Over the past five years, 517 buyout funds have been raised by U.S.-based firms, according to Thomson One, a product of Thomson Reuters.

For public pension funds, private equity firms significantly outperformed the S&P 500 as of Sept. 30, 2013, over the long haul, but they are underperforming in the short term, according to data from Private Equity Growth Capital Council.
